Blossom (九重紫), a historical drama featuring Meng Ziyi and Li Yunrui, has emerged as an unexpected dark horse this December. After all, this isn’t a show featuring top traffic stars with droves of fans tuning in, and when word-of-mouth propels viewership, you know it’s good. Production company Youhug has churned out a lot of dramas, and this one’s proving to be a gem. The show has risen to hit 28,000 on Tencent’s heat index by its third day of premiere and could climb higher depending on how it fares as the plot progresses.
Fast-Paced Start with a Compelling Rebirth Theme
If you went in with no expectations, the first episode quickly reveals the theme of the show—rebirth, but also not your usual ill-fated lovers. This time around, the leads had just met. It’s a fast-paced episode, and it doesn’t feel like one of those where you just want to gloss over the past life. You’re already engaged in it, thanks to the solid story, directing (from Zeng Qingjie who started out filming short dramas) and acting! Not to mention, Li Yunrui’s silver hair in their first lifetime gives the actor such a handsome, brooding presence—even Meng Ziyi herself said she liked it best. The 28-year-old actor is one year younger than his co-star similar to their characters in the novel where the heroine is supposed to be older.
Blossom Synopsis
Based on the novel Nine Layers of Purple (Jiu Chong Zi) by Zhi Zhi, Blossom follows the journey of heroine Dou Zhao, who becomes a brilliant strategist and lends a helping hand to our devoted male lead Song Mo. After losing her mother and facing family struggles, Dou Zhao grew wary of love and focused on becoming self-reliant in a remote village. A chance encounter with Song Mo, who was investigating his family’s downfall, intertwined their fates. To counter rumors and mutual challenges, they married out of convenience but grew into trusted allies.
“Blossom” a Popular Title for C-Dramas
Blossom is already the third drama this year with that title—got to say, it must be a lucky charm! In Blossom was a surprise hit earlier this year, Blossoms in Adversity also did well, and now there’s Blossom. Given how all these C-dramas with the word “blossom” have fared, I’m also excited for the upcoming Blossom in Darkness and The Blossoming Love, both with actress Sun Zhenni.
