With new dramas being announced one after another, Sun Zhenni is fast becoming one of the up-and-coming actors to keep your eye on this year.
From Idol to Actress: Sun Zhenni’s Early Career
Born in Shanghai, the multi-talented Zhenni got her start in the entertainment industry as a member of the Chinese all-female idol group SNH48. In 2020, she joined the idol survival show Produce Camp where she placed 18th. Although ultimately failing to debut in the new group, Sun Zhenni showed off her cute and bubbly personality as well as her sweet yet powerful singing voice.
Breakthrough Role: Fox Spirit in Till the End of Moon
In August last year, Sun Zhenni officially announced she would be dropping the SNH48 from her social media handles and would instead focus on developing a career in acting. Although still quite a novice, the then 24-year-old started drawing buzz for her “super foxy” performance as the nine-tailed fox Pian Ran in 2023’s Till the End of Moon 长月烬明.
It’s led to more opportunities in C-dramaland as she went from supporting roles to the female lead. Sun Zhenni already has several upcoming dramas from completed ones waiting for an air date to those recently announced. And it’s no surprise that they’re mostly costume dramas, given that her breakout role was in xianxia.
Sun Zhenni’s Upcoming Dramas
Sun Zhenni’s upcoming dramas include Blossom in Darkness 十万狂花入梦来 opposite Li Hongyi, Pull Strings 师兄太稳健 with Ao Ruipeng, and The Blossoming Love 千朵桃花一世开 with Vin Zhang Binbin, which seems to be closest to her fox spirit role since she’s playing a demon. Wo Zai Ding Feng Deng Ni 我在顶峰等你 opposite Chen Jingke is the lone modern drama out of the bunch. Then there’s also The Substitute Love 替嫁小才女 opposite Zhang Zhihao, which she shot in 2020 that still hasn’t aired!
Sun Zhenni certainly has potential as an up-and-coming actress. Whether or not she’s able to carry a show remains to be seen, something we’ll all have to wait and see. Hopefully, these dramas get to air soon.

It just takes one released drama to have folks talking about her before the rest of the dramas will become released sequentially. A similar thing happened to Zhang Linghe in the past. I recall he was bullied and accused of having bad luck because at that time, none of the dramas he filmed were released. They were eventually released and it worked wonders for his career.
All a matter of time. She’s very talented and beautiful and I can’t wait to see her on screen.
