November 30 couldn’t come any sooner for Seven Tan Songyun and Zheng Yecheng fans eagerly awaiting their collab titled Brocade Odyssey 蜀锦人家. Set during the late Tang dynasty, the costume historical features Tan Songyun as the protagonist Ji Yingying who’s super obsessed with silk dyeing since childhood. Zheng Yecheng plays her unlikely knight on a white horse who ends up being her biggest supporter.
Another Female-Centric Business Tale
The Youku series finally announced its premiere just before the month ended. This marks the platform’s next historical after The Story of Pearl Girl. It is another female-centric story that explores a business theme, this time around the art of silk dyeing. I also love how the production also incorporated the aesthetic in its colourful posters. Tan Songyun’s costumes in particular are a veritable visual feast of bright embroidered pieces.
Brocade Odyssey Cast
After her modern drama As Beautiful as You which aired last July, Seven Tan Songyun returns to the costume historical genre once more. Known to deliver hits, she’d previously appeared in 2019’s Under the Power and 2021’s The Sword and the Brocade. Meanwhile, Zheng Yecheng who actually has a martial arts background last appeared in a costume drama in My Sassy Princess. Brocade Odyssey also features Jing Chao, Chen Xiao Yun and Wang Yinuo as part of the cast.
Based on the novel of the same name by author Zhuang Zhuang 桩桩, Brocade Odyssey revolves around the life of the talented Ji Yingying, a daughter of the Ji family whose secret red silk dyeing technology is coveted by many. However, the Ji family faces persistent sabotage from the rival Zhao family, led by Zhao Xiuyuan, whose love for Ji Yingying turns into vengeful hatred. Meanwhile, Yang Jinglan, the illegitimate son of a prominent family, returns after years abroad. Though initially dismissed as a frivolous aristocrat with an empty title, Jinglan is on a covert mission to uncover hidden truths from his family’s past. In his investigation, he grows closer to Ji Yingying, rediscovering their childhood connection and joining forces with her to navigate the political and personal challenges threatening the brocade trade.
