Yang Mi has shed her makeup and glamour to play the protagonist of the rural drama This Thriving Land (生万物). Filming began in May 2024 in Shandong and wrapped on August 5, 2024. The first look shows the actress in a drastically different and more serious role and the few glimpses we have so far suggest a powerful performance.
In This Thriving Land, Yang Mi plays Ning Xiuxiu, the daughter of the richest man in Tianniumiao Village. Kidnapped by bandits on her wedding day, her father refuses to sell land to pay her ransom, instead marrying her younger sister to her childhood sweetheart. Xiuxiu breaks ties with her father and marries a farmer instead. Her new life allows her to understand the significance of land to farmers, and she is inspired by revolutionary ideas to liberate the minds of the women in the village.
Known for popular costume dramas such as Chinese Paladin 3, Palace, and Eternal Love, the 37-year-old star, who’s among the top post ’85 actresses, certainly seems to be transitioning into more diverse roles with the projects that she is choosing. Even though her works that aired this year have all fallen below expectations, this new role as Ning Xiuxiu looks promising, marking a departure from Yang Mi’s image.
The Thriving Land also stars Ou Hao as the leading man, with seasoned actors like Ni Dahong and Qin Hailu. It’s interesting to see Fair Xing also in the cast, as this is certainly quite a different role for the actress, who often plays the spunky heroine idol dramas. Special appearances by Lin Yongjian and Lyric Lan add to the casting lineup.
