Song Weilong has long been known for his handsome “pretty boy” looks, yet this image was frequently paired with the stigma of being perceived as wooden on screen, despite breakout roles in modern romance hits such as Find Yourself and Go Ahead. But that perception is now changing due to his latest drama, Shine on Me, adapted from the novel of the same name by renowned romance author Gu Man, whose works have repeatedly proven to be adaptation gold for television. Once again, Gu Man’s storytelling magic has translated into ratings success, with the drama’s Tencent Video heat index soaring to 30,130, the highest for modern romance dramas on the platform since 2024.
The series follows Zhao Jinmai’s portrayal of Nie Xiguang, a wealthy young woman navigating the transition from campus life to the professional world. In the original novel, the heroine’s two male leads are both popular among readers. Song Weilong portrays Lin Yusen, a neurosurgeon who, due to unforeseen circumstances, transitions into the corporate world. This time around, the 26-year-old actor has won over audiences not merely with his visuals, but with a noticeably more layered performance, earning praise and being hailed as “the new benchmark for modern romance male leads.”
Song Weilong debuted as a model in 2015 and has now spent a full decade in the entertainment industry. After early success, his career was disrupted by legal disputes with Yu Zheng’s agency, resulting in several years of reduced visibility until he established his own studio and quietly rebuilt his acting portfolio. Shine on Me is no doubt a success for the actor, allowing him to shed his “flower vase” label to also prove his acting. Ironically, his renewed popularity has also sparked a wave of online “digging,” with netizens rediscovering his awkward, hilariously unpolished vlogs back when he was a teen, a huge contrast to the Song Weilong we know now.

Handsome guy.

Nothing against him
Shine On Me, I find him a boring actor, thinking if only a better lead actor, would hve enjoyed the series more.

lol is this post satire? He is still a terrible actor. Still pretty but still no talent in the acting department. The role didn’t require too much of him besides looking handsome anyway. There were emotional scenes where he had to act like he had trauma from his car accident, his performance was mediocre if I’m being generous. ZJM acted circles around him. Even though second male lead’s character was super annoying and I hated every time he was on screen, I thought even he had more expression than SWL.

Thank God! I started questioning my sanity when I saw this PR piece . I’m seconding every single word you wrote here. His acting skills leave huge room for improvement, if I’m being generous.
