You won’t believe what just announced its release date and just in time for “520 day” or Chinese Valentine’s day too! Wednesday couldn’t come any faster as the much awaited fantasy romance Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Red-Moon Pact 狐妖小红娘月红篇 has indeed claimed May 23 as its premiere. For a minute there, folks weren’t quite so sure if the rumours about the drama airing soon would push through. After all, with the now airing Joy of Life 2 making a killing in the ratings, people wondered whether Fox Spirit Matchmaker would avoid going head to head against the super popular sequel. It seems this isn’t the case at all.

Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Red-Moon Pact Synopsis
Adapted from a manhua of the same name by Tuo Xiaoxin, the story follows the head of the Tushan fox clan, Tushan Honghong (Yang Mi), who makes the acquaintance of the human Dongfang Yuechu (Gong Jun) as he is being pursued by his enemy. They gradually fall in love. In order to protect their loved ones and maintain peace between their two clans, the two lovers must together face multiple twists and turns and overcome challenges.

High Expectations
As far as expectations go, you bet it’s gonna be pretty high for the Yang Mi and Simon Gong Jun helmed fantasy romance series. The 37-year-old actress in particular is known to shine in this genre so it’s practically a no brainer. Plus, considering the successful comebacks of her fellow “post ’85 born actresses” such as Liu Shishi in A Journey to Love, Blossoms Shanghai for Tang Yan and the recent The Legend of Shen Li that starred Zhao Liying, the pressure surely is mounting as all eyes turn to Yang Mi whose recent works didn’t perform as hoped.

Likewise, expectations to do well are also heavy on Yang Mi’s co-star Gong Jun’s part, whose follow up dramas to the mega popular hit series Word of Honor didn’t fare as well. The 31-year-old actor saw his popularity skyrocket after playing Wen Kexing in the hit BL show. But despite all that, his next dramas such as The Legend of Anle drew criticism.

So Many Couples
Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Red-Moon Pact clearly maintains a strong fantasy romance theme, showcased by its beautiful couple posters. Aside from the main leads, it features Guo Xiaoting as a powerful nine-tailed fox opposite Wei Zheming whose character has unparalleled combat skills, Zhu Xudan as a princess and her love interest played by Yang Shize, Chen Yao as a demon hunter tasked with capturing Mao Zijun’s character, and Chen Duling and Zhang Linghe portraying a couple in a forbidden love. Additionally, Hu Lianxin plays the strategic thinker from the fox clan. With this being an ensemble cast, it appears many storylines will be explored for each character.

Ash
The acting skills of both Yang Mi and Gong Jun are most certainly not outstanding at all. At least Gong Jun has the advantage of being really pleasant eye-candy. But hope that the ensemble cast (many familiar names there), coupled with good storytelling and directing can make this a good drama to watch.

I’m not very interested in the main pairing. I’m looking forward to seeing Chen Yao and Guo Xiaoting couples!
