It’s Chinese streaming platform Youku’s turn to unveil their upcoming projects, and it looks like Zhou Ye is back for another costume drama after Word of Honor, going from adorable to badass as a xianxia heroine in black and red robes. Along with Neo Hou Minghao in a contrasting blue, the two look simply stunning in the new posters for Back from the Brink 护心.
Filming is still ongoing since the boot ceremony was held in Hengdian on August 14, 2021. The story is adapted from a novel by Jiu Lu Fei Xiang 九鹭非香. The Legends, Cang Lan Jue and The Blue Whisper are other dramas adapted from the author’s novels.
We all know the potential of the genre to catapult its leads to stardom. Neo Hou has tried a number of genres but it’s his first time to headline a xianxia romance. It’s also a first for newer actress Zhou Ye who’s only been more active in the industry in the past two years. Many would’ve seen her as part of the cast of the critically-acclaimed Better Days. This year, she endeared herself to audiences as part of the Word of Honor cast.
Back to the Brink follows Yan Hui, a student cultivating to become immortal who was expelled for being too rebellious. She’s perfectly happy doing nothing until she crosses paths with the “evil” dragon Tian Yao. Tian Yao was dismembered by the woman that he loved and his body parts are sealed in different places. He sees hope upon meeting Yanhui and realizing that she help him unlock the seal.
I dead the novel and it is beautiful, I hope the drama will at least follow the key points especially Yan Hui’s initial reluctance in helping this man whow tries to force her or the couple slowly trusting each other. I’ll keep my expectations low considering how the average drama adaptation tend to be disappointing
