3 Anticipated Historical Dramas That Began Filming This Feb 2021: The Blue Whisper and More

It’s a busy, busy time in Hengdian World Studios, which as fans would know is the place where a lot of dramas are shot. There have been reports on the very buzz-worthy casting for three costume dramas making its way this month, and I know I’m jumping the gun on some of these, but I’m just too excited!

The Blue Whisper 驭鲛记之与君初相识

This just in today. Dilraba Dilmurat and Allen Ren Jialun were spotted at the booting ceremony for their new drama The Blue Whisper on Feb. 18, 2021. Dilraba recently wrapped her highly-anticipated collaboration with Yang Yang in You Are My Glory. Meanwhile, Ren Jialun has also wrapped the anticipated live-action adaptations of the popular novel One Life, One Incarnation – Beautiful Bones opposite Bai Lu.

You would think that these collabs can’t get any better and yet drama gods have blessed us with a fresh pairing by putting Dilireba and Ren Jialun in a xianxia romance. Adapted from another novel by The Legends author Jiu Lu Fei Xiang 九鹭非香, The Blue Whisper tells a romance between a human with the ability to control demons and a merman prince who is held captive and send to be tamed by her. Ashes of Love director Chu Yui-bun who also worked with Dilireba in Chang Ge Xing comes onboard.

Meng Hua Lu 梦华录

There have been leaked photos from the set of Meng Hua Lu but neither of the rumored leads have arrived. Nonetheless, word on the street is that Mulan star Crystal Liu Yifei will be back in C-dramaland with a female-centric period piece opposite actor Chen Xiao.

She will play tea shop owner Zhao Pan’er who learns that she’s been abandoned by her fiancee. She goes to the capital to find him but he plots against her. I am guessing that the “scumbag fiancee” can’t be the leading man? Along the way, Zhao Pan’er stands up to injustices and uses her beauty and wisdom to succeed. The story is based on Saving the Dusty-windy a.k.a. Saving the Prostitute a.k.a. Rescued by a Coquette 赵盼儿风月救风尘 by Guan Hanqing, a notable playwright and poet during the Yuan Dynasty. Considering that both Liu Yifei and Chen Xiao starred in two different adaptations of The Return of the Condor Heroes, it’ll be a meeting between two generations of Yang Guo and Xiaolongnu should their rumored casting prove to be true!

Who Rules the World (lit.) 且试天下

Who Rules the World (lit.) 且试天下 which has long announced Zhao Lusi as the leading lady is also reported to have started filming as the actress was spotted on set on Feb. 3, 2021. Zhao Lusi has made a name for herself as the leading lady for a number of smaller web dramas. This time, she’ll be playing two characters with different personalities. Yang Yang is still the rumored lead and should it turn out to be true, it’ll mark his return to the wuxia (martial arts) genre. Who Rules the World will be directed by Yin Tao whose works include Love and Redemption.
