The 55th Golden Bell Awards was held on September 26, 2020 at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei. Once the haven for many much-loved classics, Taiwanese dramas have been proving their mettle with recent successes like The World Between Us in 2019 and the mind-boggling Someday or One Day 想見你 this year, both of which earned praise for being top-notch productions.
Unsurprisingly, Someday or One Day emerged as last night’s big winner as it brought home four major awards that include: Best TV Series, Alice Ko for Best Actress, Jian Qi-Feng and Lin Xin-Hui for Best Screenwriter and Best Innovative Programme.
It was Alice Ko’s second time to win the award. She said in her acceptance speech, “I’m really happy and very lucky to encounter this script, I feel like a lot of things happened in 2020, hope that from now on, everyone can give more warmth and kindness to those around them, thanks everyone. It’s worth noting that Alice Ko beat out fellow actress Cheryl Yang who was nominated for her work in The Mirror by one vote. It is their second time going against each other.
Leading man Greg Hsu who shot up to fame from the drama missed out on the Best Actor award but he said, ‘I received a lot from this project, I wish 2020 well, thank you.”
A tribute was made to a number of celebrities who unfortunately passed this year like Alien Huang, Luo Pei-ying, Serena Liu Zhen and Godfrey Gao who passed away last year. Alien Huang (Xiao Gui) was found dead in his home on September 16, 2020. His co-host Jacky Wu on the Taiwanese variety show Mr. Playerpintoo 綜藝玩很大 had lamented that he still owes Xiao Gui a Golden Bell Award as he was nominated twice in 2015 and 2019 but hasn’t won and wanted to try again for another year.
Last night, Alien Huang finally won the Best Variety Show Host award which his father accepted on his behalf. His brother-in-law Sam took to Instagram to share a photo of a paper model of the award that they have burned as an offering to Xiao Gui.
