Jin Chen Explains Car Accident Controversy Involving Assistant Taking the Blame

Chinese actress Jin Chen reached a second peak in her career after appearing on Sisters Who Make Waves and being part of movies like No More Bets. She later joined the cast of Joy of Life 2. However, the 35-year-old actress has become embroiled in controversy over a car accident that occurred in March last year. Jin Chen who was the driver allegedly left the scene and even had her assistant take the blame, triggering public outcry.

The issue has resurfaced nearly a year late due to a recent paparazzi exposé that saw the actress trending on Chinese social media. They also alleged that the insurance company discovered the driver’s true identity did not match and reported the case on suspicion of impersonation and insurance fraud. The potentially career-ending allegations were addressed the following day through statements from both police authorities and the actress.

Jin Chen acknowledged responsibility for the accident and admitted that her assistant had misreported the driver’s identity, while firmly denying any insurance fraud.

Jin Chen Admits She Was Driving

According to Jin Chen, the accident occurred while she was traveling with her manager and assistant in a rented vehicle. “On March 16, 2025, my manager, assistant, and I rented a car and went out for leisure. I was the one driving the vehicle,” she stated. She explained that the crash was caused by a sudden attempt to avoid an animal. “While driving, in order to avoid a small dog that suddenly ran into the road, I made an emergency turn and collided with a roadside warning sign and the wall of a residential property.” Police later confirmed the incident was a single-vehicle accident involving property damage and minor injuries to those inside the car.

Assistant’s False Statement and Emergency Medical Situation

Jin Chen addressed the most controversial aspect of the case, her assistant claiming to be the driver. “At the time of the accident, only the three of us were present. Because my injuries were relatively severe, my manager immediately took me to the emergency room, where I underwent urgent surgery. My assistant stayed behind to handle the accident,” she wrote. Jin Chen also included a blurred out photo where she had obvious injuries to her face especially her nose.

She admitted that the assistant provided false information to police. “Due to the sudden nature of the incident and the intense emotional stress at the time, my assistant told the traffic police that they were the driver and cooperated in completing the accident report.” Authorities later confirmed that the assistant’s act of “standing in” for Jin Chen constituted a violation, but emphasized that no insurance claim was filed, ruling out insurance fraud.

Financial Compensation

Jin Chen stated that once she regained consciousness after surgery, she insisted on correcting the situation. “After my surgery ended and I regained consciousness, I learned how the incident had been handled. I believed that as the actual driver, I must bear full responsibility for the accident and for the improper handling that occurred afterward.”

She said she immediately took steps to prevent any insurance involvement. “Therefore, I instructed my assistant to immediately contact the insurance company to apply for the withdrawal of the insurance claim. All vehicle damage costs, as well as the economic losses related to roadside facilities and the residential wall, were borne entirely by me personally,” she added. Police corroborated this timeline, confirming that Jin Chen paid all damages out of pocket.

In her closing remarks, Jin Chen expressed remorse for her conduct. “As a public figure, I failed to set a good example. Instead, my personal behavior occupied social resources and caused trouble and concern for everyone. For this, I feel deeply ashamed… Once again, I sincerely apologize.”

Police Report

In their official notice, Shaoxing Keqiao police confirmed that Jin Chen was the actual driver, that her assistant falsely claimed to be driving, and that Jin Chen’s departure from the scene was due to injuries requiring medical treatment, which does not constitute a hit-and-run. Authorities stated that the assistant’s conduct will be handled separately in accordance with the law.

The case, which lay largely unnoticed for nearly a year, has now drawn widespread attention though some are skeptical over the motives behind releasing the news now.
