If you’re one of the many left unsatisfied or confused by the ‘bad ending’ in Liu Shishi and Liu Yuning’s A Journey to Love, here’s a little something that might potentially lift your mood at least when it comes to the ‘A Journey to’ universe. That said, a spinoff series titled A Journey to Glow 一念江南 has recently announced its cast, starring Esther Liu Shuxin who truly found her groove in the costume historical drama genre and Wang Anyu last appeared in period costume opposite Zhao Lusi in The Last Immortal. Both Esther and Wang Anyu have been appearing in a couple of modern dramas lately so its good to see them back in a costume historical.
Produced by Linmon Pictures and iQIYI, A Journey to Glow takes place in the same universe as A Journey to Love, in a small town in the south of the Yangtze. Once a land of abundance, it gradually became impoverished where bandits ran rampant due to incompetent governance and heavy taxes. Esther plays a female thief who eventually has a “personality glow up” to become a responsible and kind hero as she grows. By chance, she meets a demoted official – Wang Anyu’s character who has big ambitions buts ends up frustrated because he has no means to realise them.
Their little ragtag group gradually grows to include a general looking for his master, a female guard and a fu er dai rich kid who always failed when starting a business. Through shared hardships and a common goal – locating a legendary secret treasure, they work hard to restore their floundering town to its former glory.
And perhaps, maybe unlike its predecessor A Journey to Love with its ending, drama fans can finally get the happy ending they’ve been looking for? We shall see.
A Journey to Glow is written by Zhang Wei and directed by Hong Ling and Zhang Shuheng.
