The newly-announced Republican adventure series, The South Bureau 南部档案 stars Steven Zhang Xincheng and Ryan Ding Yuxi. Think mysterious cases, warlords with toxic plants and conspiracies being investigated by two secret agents from the South Bureau. The series is based from Nanpai Sanshu’s uber popular Daomu Biji novels – The Southern Archives. What’s more, the famed author is also listed as the series producer and screenwriter, so I definitely have high hopes this is going to be a good one.
With Justice in the Dark star Zhang Xincheng and Ding Yuxi listed as dual male leads, many are asking if this is in the Boys’ Love (BL) genre. The original novel is not, as the story is within the Daomu Biji universe which explains why everyone’s surname is Zhang. You may remember Zhang Qishan from The Mystic Nine and Zhang Qiling from The Lost Tomb. Zhang Xincheng and Ding Yuxi star as agents Zhang Hailou and Zhang Haixia respectively. Their characters are like brothers but not related by blood as they’re both orphans. Actress Jiang Peiyao rounds up the trio as the beautiful sniper Zhang Haiqi. The South Bureau also features actor Fu Dalong.
When strange happenings are reported in the Nanyang region during the early years of the Republic of China, two secrets agents are sent in to investigate. After multiple challenges, some of which are a matter of life or death, all roads lead to the mysterious ship Nan’an. I’d been wondering why there’s a picture of a ship in the poster and I guess this is the answer.
