Chinese actress Ren Min has faced her fair share of bashers, which started when she starred opposite Xiao Zhan in The Longest Promise. When the show aired, many criticized her appearance, calling her “ugly” and claiming she’s not attractive in period dramas and she’s better off in modern roles such as Ray of Light. Some also argued that the backlash wasn’t just about her visuals but extended to her acting. Despite the criticism, Ren Min continued to take on costume drama roles, appearing in White Cat Legend in a special supporting role, and most recently, as the female lead opposite Zhang Wanyi in The Rise of Ning.

While there will be haters who still aren’t happy with her visuals, the response this time around has been much more positive, with the hashtag #任敏很灵# (“Ren Min is full of aura”) in praise of her visuals in The Rise of Ning. She plays Luo Yining, the seventh daughter in a noble family who returns home after being wrongly accused of causing her stepmother’s miscarriage (we’ve certainly heard that before). So far, the 24-year-old actress has captured the level-headedness of her character, her hair and makeup enhancing her poised and fresh look.
While some may still feel that Serenade of Peaceful Joy gave Ren Min her best costume drama styling and a strong breakout role as a princess, her visual in The Rise of Ning has held its own.

This styling is much more suited for her. She looks adorable. I did not love the blunt cut bangs she was sporting in the Longest Promise.
