Yang Xuwen and Yang Zhigang Tandem Back with “Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty II: To the West” Out on July 18th

It won’t be long before Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty II: To the West 唐朝诡事录·西行, the sequel to the cult hit Strange Tales of the Tang Dynasty, hits the small screens starting July 18, 2024 on iQIYI. Yang Xuwen and Yang Zhigang, both of whom starred in the original, once again team up for this one, reprising their roles as Lu Lingfeng and Su Wuming in the upcoming sequel. As the adventures of the fantastic duo take them out west, who knows what dangers and interesting cases they will encounter their journey takes them towards the unknown?

The Original Cast Returns for the Sequel

Funnily enough, the two unlikely partners have also been dubbed by Netizens as “brothers in hardship” now that season 2 sees Lu Lingfeng “demoted” in rank and Su Wuming “demoted” to a civilian and exiled from Chang’an. Remember how in season one Lingfeng was also “demoted”, going from a rash, prideful noble to an expert detective before joining hands with Su Wuming to solve supernatural mysteries?

You’ll also be seeing Gao Siwen as Pei Xijun, Chen Chuang as Master Fei, and Sun Xuening as badass fighter Ying Tao return in the sequel.

iQIYI’s Next Release

Now that we’re moving into the second half of the year, it seems the platform is trying to be more strategic about its releases. Unlike Youku that had the recent hit The Double and Tencent which had consecutive hits, many of iQiyi’s offerings for 2024 didn’t do very well. Even their more recent Follow Your Heart starring Luo Yunxi and Song Yi didn’t fare as well as expected. And now that that series has ended, it leaves Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty II: To the West as the next historical drama to go up against the highly awaited sequel to Tencent’s Lost You Forever, which we all know made a huge splash last summer.

Despite having zero high traffic stars in its roster, Strange Tales of the Tang Dynasty managed to achieve a cult following with it being so well made. Whilst not the buzziest of shows to hit screens and very niche, if they can do it again for the sequel, the period mystery show is sure to get the same sort of cult following as the original.
