The recent announcement of the nominees for the 29th Shanghai TV Festival Magnolia Awards ignited heated discussion, particularly concerning actor Wang Yibo, who was notably absent from the list. While some celebrated their favorite stars, such as Hu Ge receiving his fifth Magnolia Awards nomination, this time for the popular TV series “Blossoms Shanghai,” which led with 9 nominations and saw co-star Tang Yan also nominated for Best Actress alongside Yang Zi for “Lost You Forever,” Wang Yibo’s Best Actor snub stirred dissatisfaction among his fans.
Wang Yibo was not nominated despite top billing Republican series “War of Faith,” while his co-star Wang Yang, who has third billing after female lead Li Qin, received a nomination for Best Actor. This decision left some netizens feeling that Wang Yibo had been unfairly overlooked. Some questioned the rationale behind Wang Yang’s nomination for Best Actor when many believed he should have been considered for Best Supporting Actor. Adolph, a brand endorsed by Wang Yibo, seemingly echoed these sentiments when they posted on their official social media, “You are my ‘best actor.'”

If Wang Yibo had been nominated, the situation might have been different, but his absence alongside Wang Yang’s nomination left some fans upset. “War of Faith,” which focused on the journey of Wei Ruolai, Wang Yibo’s character fared well in ratings, becoming the first iQIYI series in 2024 to break 10,000 popularity points on the platform. Nonetheless, some suggested that both actors may have been considered dual male leads. Furthermore, there are instances in the past where actors in supporting roles were nominated for Best Actor in the Magnolia Awards.

Tbf Yibo can’t act and there arr so many other less known talented actors sho should have been nominated. WY fans go crazy bruh

Tbf, he has improved his acting skills in War of Faith. Obviously, he has worked hard on his own in private. But yeah, it is not that good. I agree too that there are a number of other young actors who really can act. He needs more range of work and characters. Hopefully, he will get to be counted among the top tier one day. I most certainly agree that he does not even deserve a nomination for best actor, lead or supporting, at the moment.

If he is the third billing then he should be nominated for supporting actor instead. Bribery much?
Lisa
Third billing means you’re support? I feel like I’ve seen dramas where multiple people are considered leads… And WYB has improved a lot over the years, but I think Wang Yang is still a few levels above him in terms of acting.

They are listed as Main Actors. Especially in shows where there is an ensembled cast, rather than the drama focusing on just the one character.
And I agree ….. WYB acting skills are not at that level yet, even though he has improved quite a bit since the last one of his that I watched and dropped. These are just fans who would think their idol is the best actor even if all he did was to stand there, expressionless, which has been his most usual expression thus far. The same type of fans as XZ has.
