Bilibili’s new historical romance series Echoes of the Self (照镜辞), starring Sebrina Chen Yao and Quan Yilun, has officially begun filming. The series follows Fu Wei, a woman who retains memories from her past life. Wrongfully killed in her previous existence, she is reborn with a single goal—to seek revenge and rewrite her fate.
The rebirth revenge theme is becoming quite common, but this drama could surprise us—just like Blossom, which became a hit thanks to its beautiful aesthetics and solid plot. Besides, this one seems to have a twist with some saying it could be that the heroine has two souls, going against her past self?
Chen Yao, best known for her breakout role as Yue Qiluo in Wu Xin: The Monster Killer, delivered a complex, eerie yet endearing performance. While she has mostly played supporting roles in recent years, this drama gives her a chance to shine as the female lead.
Meanwhile, rising star Quan Yilun gained popularity from his second lead role in An Ancient Love Song, also from Bilibili. And who better to take on a leading role than the actor who played the kind-hearted Wushan in Blossom, whose one-sided love for the heroine left a lasting impression. Already drawing comparisons to Blossom, Echoes of the Self also has a small age gap between the leads an older woman-younger man romance, as Chen Yao, 30, is five years older than Quan Yilun. It also stars He Fengtian (The Double) and Joyin Cai.
