Warning: Ending Spoilers Ahead
Guardians of the Dafeng ended its run for some viewers last night, and soon after, Guardians of the Dafeng Season 2 (大奉打更人第二季) trended on the Weibo hot search. This was expected, given that Season 1 ended with an unfinished story and an obvious setup for more to come in Season 2. However, Chinese dramas have a less-than-stellar track record with multi-season shows. Often, the second season is never made, or if it is, it features a completely new cast. In some cases, a third season might be greenlit, but it takes forever to arrive.
The Possibility of Guardians of the Dafeng Season 2
Some dramas that have already finished filming end up being too long to meet the 40-episode cap and are split into multiple seasons. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the case here. So whether a new season gets filmed or not will likely depend on how well Season 1 performs. The good news is, while Guardians of the Dafeng didn’t achieve the same megasuccess as Joy of Life, with which it was often compared as both are marketed as male-centric dramas, it still performed well, reaching milestones such as hitting 30,000 on Tencent’s heat index, not to mention the show has avid fans who loved the humor imbued action fantasy series.
A Finale with Emotional Highs
The show made several changes from the original novel, but the finale was undeniably a high point for the story. Xu Qian (Dylan Wang) makes his epic takedown of two villains as the good guys came together at the end. It’s been a difficult journey to uphold justice, but they did it. Xu Qian leaves his post as a watchman and shed tears, it’s an emotional moment for everyone. But just as the emperor arrives for the final showdown, things take an unexpected turn. The black magician makes Xu Qian disappear mid-battle, and everyone forgets he ever existed.
A Setup for More to Come
Subsequent developments may feel like a cop-out to some, especially since Master Wei’s death as he fought to take down the Wushen Sect is simply narrated in a few seconds. Our hero retrieves the body and gives it to the alchemist, suggesting that Wei Yuan’s story isn’t over yet. As for Xu Qian, he learns that the black magician is his father, Xu Pingfeng, played by Peter Ho, who clearly has some grand plan in motion.

Only 5.4/10 on Douban with heavy skew towards 1 and 2 / 10. How is it possible for investors to put up cash for S2?

this series is super great! not sure what is douban and who are the ones voting but maybe those people who love this series are not aware of douban to help with better rating of 9 for sure.

Douban in China is comparable to MyDramaList (MDL), IMDb, or Rotten Tomatoes for Americans and international audiences. Chinese productions often refer to Douban because their primary viewers—Chinese audiences (not Americans or internationals, unless they can read Chinese)—rate and write reviews for movies and dramas on this platform.
Someone can clarify this further, but I think Douban is their main platform for gauging audience reception because this platform is pretty much mentioned whenever a C-drama is aired to see how it is faring with the audience. A rating of 7 typically indicates an average or okay performance.
For Americans and other international audiences, a drama may be considered an international success if it exceeds the expectations set by the producers or if it was marketed specifically for global viewers. However, I doubt China—or any other country—places much importance on international opinions compared to their domestic audience, as their focus is on catering to their own viewers. That said, a drama popular overseas might still gain recognition for its success internationally, but ensuring it performs well domestically would likely be crucial for greenlighting a sequel.

I really did not like it. I found the script poor, characters one dimensional, acting subpar, and all attention came from Dylan’s vast fandom. If it was less known actor it would be epic flop. The meme lovers will like it, but in acting terms quality is very low. I would be very surprised that S2 with same cast happens. I also think Dylan’s team will not be too happy to have him in S2 after such low ratings. He’s already having hit and miss dramas. Time to get serious if he wants to grow.

It’s not entirely bad for me. One of the saving graces of this drama was the comedic scenes and they were downright hilarious, actually. In terms of acting quality, everyone has different views. I find some of their acting quite acceptable, specially in the last few episodes. If there was one major flaw I can agree, was their attempt to intrigue the minds of the viewers by making that cliffhanger. 40 episodes should be enough to close the story and leave a satisfying ending but they wasted a few episodes for the unimportant elements.

Some comedic relief was enjoyable true, but not enough to ‘save’ the drama in my eyes, acting wise I see this drama as subpar, but worst of all is poor script and one dimensional characters (actors can do only as much with script). Overall bad ratings and negative press makes it red flag for Dylan’s team to agree to S2. I would be surprised to see it happen with the same cast. I have no clue who thought this could be in same league as JOL.

CLEARLY, you are here to pull down what possible viewers would think. I have watched it and it’s not too bad compared to other c. actors. Despite what Douban rating is, it reached 30k heat index means many r watching and engaging, thus it is enjoyable and pleasing. The casts specially the protagonist was able to embody his/their role in the story. I actually would like to commend Dylan for taking d challenge to give a go in all his investors for d drama prior to it’s airing means, he is trying his best and is willing to take challenge. See no matter what haters say, the drama WAS SUCCESSFUL.

look at ratings in wetv, viki, mydramalust, etc… all 8+ to 9.5 and on top hot list so cannot just look at one unknown douban rating.

Brilliant show. From what I hear, the duo an eating isn’t an accurate rating anyway. Guardians of the Dafeng has done extremely well and viewers were tuning in despite the haters trying to put a negative spin on it. I suppose China is a competitive market when it comes to dramas and there are those who are set on trying to destroy actors careers. From what I see Wang Hedi is a very unique actor and doesn’t easily conform to Chinese entertainment rules I guess. Also what’s with the accent discrimination against him?
