Dylan Wang, best known for his breakout role as Dongfang Qingcang in Love Between Fairy and Devil, has stirred up a whirlwind of discussion following the release of his latest album Dreams of the Youth (少年梦). Particularly, the song Fate (命) has caught the public’s attention due to its lyrics, which some believe shades at other celebs and was deemed overly confident by some netizens.
His Roles Dongfang Qingcang and Xu Qi An
The lyrics in question, “Dongfang Qingcang and Xu Qi An can only be portrayed by me,” reference his iconic role and his upcoming drama Guardians of the Dafeng. While fans defend Dylan Wang’s confidence, critics argue that his claims diminish the collective effort behind a successful production. Comparisons have even been drawn to established stars like Sun Li, with those remarking, “Even Sun Li never claimed she’s the only one who could play Zhen Huan.”
Dylan Wang Forays Into Rap
Released on December 16, Dylan Wang’s new album features 10 tracks co-created as SEEWE. It chronicles themes of youth and dreams, with Dylan Wang involved in the composition and lyrics. However, the 25-year-old actor’s foray into rap has drawn mixed reactions. Critics label the lyrics as narcissistic, while others praise his exploration of new artistic avenues.
This isn’t the first time Dylan has faced backlash. Despite his immense popularity following Love Between Fairy and Devil, his acting and creative choices continue to divide public opinion, with detractors accusing him of prioritizing side ventures such as variety shows, establishing his clothing brand and now making music instead of improving his craft as an actor. Fans defend Dylan Wang, praising his boldness and authenticity. Supporters see his foray into music as artistic freedom, arguing “who doesn’t have dreams” and urging others to appreciate his genuine effort instead of overly scrutinizing his work.

gee did they even read the novel….Even tho I love watching his dramas/characters I was turned off big time with this drama because I was fan of novel & author for years before remake…
Coralie
I mean is the song essentially rap? it’s rap culture to boast and act like you’re the shiz…
Cc
Isnt this what rap is all about though? I don’t find this offensive at all. He isn’t calling anyone out here. It’s pretty tame lol

I personally believe wholeheartedly that Dylan is a great variety show host and should forray into his clothing brand and music making venture if he wants to but I 100% DO NOT AGREE that he is a good actor. If we were to compile a list of actors and acctress who CAN ACTUALLY ACT without taking into consideration their “popularity” he’d be on the lower tier of the list. LBFAD was popular bc he had a director/team who knows what they’re doing. If the director is shit and doesn’t know how to shoot a scene, this drama wouldn’t be as popular as it is. Let’s take a look at Fangs of Fortune. The drama is a visual feast for sure, but can’t save itself from a good plot.
There are many scenes in the show where I thoguht Dylan’s acting is kind of stiff. For example, the forced kiss scene was “hot” to some degree when I first saw it, but I found the acting a bit stiff and after analyzing the scene some more, a bit SA (sorry if I trigger anyone here).

I agree with you. Acting wise he has a lot of room for growth. It’s not like he’s terrible, but he’s nowhere the top of the list of actually good actors. The voice actor also did wonders for the character of Dongfang Qingcang. I personally think the role wouldn’t have had the same impact if it was his natural voice.
However, like another commentor said above, rap culture has a lot of lyrics where they sound confident, etc. I think it’s just part of the “persona” they portray. Of course he could choose to use lyrics that are a bit more humble, but what he’s doing is very common. Also, a lot of actors do variety and other ventures, so I’m not sure what the big deal is. He should be able to participate in what he wants as long as it’s not harming anybody.

Not really interested in Dylan as to me, he just an idol who can’t act. But I do not see why he shouldn’t venture into music or other businesses (as long as they are legit) if he wants to. Up to him to plot what his career path should be.
Coralie
hmm here’s where I disagree. he CAN act, and didn’t do so bad in the drama with yukee chen, but his voice does him no favors (and I wish he would stop insisting on using his own.) is he the best actor, nope. but saying he can’t act is not true.
or maybe he’s just really good at acting ‘chok’ which covers up his inadequacies, but even that takes some measure of acting skills
Drama_fluff
for sure certain roles suit him better than others! but I’m just saying if we were to do an overall omparison of him with everyone else in the industry, he is not that good an actor. I didn’t say he can’t act, just that he is not a strong enough actor yet.
Simply
Don’t agree. Not many actors can speak with just a facial expression. He out shines most actors with just his facial expressions and true personality alone. Add his good looks and smile. Facts that made him global.

I don’t see anything wrong with overconfident lyrics. As other have pointed out, that’s just how rap is. I also think it’s smart for actors to branch out and have an alternative source of income in case their acting career doesn’t work out.
In a way, I do agree that only Dylan Wang can portray Dongfang Qingcang–and Xu Qi An–because he was the first actor to portray the character AND because Love Between Fairy and Devil was such a hit. Anyone who takes on the role after will always be compared to Dylan Wang. His version of Dongfang Qingcang will always be what people think of when they think of Dongfang Qingcang, regardless of whether they liked his acting or not.
I think his acting was decent in the drama–not amazing, but enjoyable, and I also agree with Lisa that the voice actor contributed a lot to the character because his own voice would not have been commanding enough. I’ve only watched a couple of his dramas, so I can’t comment if he has improved since then, but he’s young still and has a lot of time to improve his craft.

I have a soft spot for Dylan… I feel haters or bored keyboard warriors will always find issues with any celebs everytime. He is doing what he enjoys… if he feels this direction may not suit him, he can drop it after.
As for being a actor, he has filmed in afew dramas that suits him. He has room for improvements but not too bad. He is good on variety shows, I hope we can watch him more. I do like him with my favourite Zhou Shen… they are so cute together.
Tina
I’ll have to check him out on the variety shows one of these days. I’ve only watched snippets here and there (no time to watch everything), but from what I can tell, he’s a fun guy who gets along well with the other members.
And, hey, I don’t blame you for having a soft spot for Dylan. He’s good looking, fun, humorous, and can act. What’s not to like? Lol!
Simply
Love his variety shows too. Looks like fun! Want more every time I watch one! His acting, music, modeling, promotional activities, game shows, PERSONALITY…it is all up to par. If people don’t like something they don’t have to watch or listen but no need to insult or put down. People just hating because he’s blown up globally. Non famous social butterflies have haters and the famous ones like D.Wang just get a magnifying version of jealousy/hate.
Edna
what we have here is pure jealousy and envy in his industry
about his success. leave him alone. we love in the United States!
Simply
Agree!!!!
