Spoilers Ahead **
Now that Lost You Forever 2 ended, let’s take a quick look at the wins and “losses” in the emotion laden story.
Lost You Forever 2: Who Lives, Who Dies
In a nutshell, everyone got what they wanted the most in the end.. but at what cost? Cangxuan firmly sat on the throne finally letting Xiao Yao go. Instead of following the novel where Cangxuan masterminds the killing of Tushan Jing, the culprit becomes Chenrong Xinyue. The dramatic confrontation scene between Xiao Yao and Cangxuan simply occurs in an imaginary scene. Tu Shanjing is “killed” and falls into the sea but was rescued by Xiang Liu. After his return, Jing gets the girl and marries Xiao Yao.

Chishui Fenglong died when he took the arrow Xiang Liu had meant for Cangxuan. But before he did so, he was able to plead for Cangxuan to spare his sister Xinyue for her wrongdoings. The attempt on Cangxuan’s life causes irreparable rift between Xiao Yao and Xiang Liu. But the most bittersweet conclusion if I’m being honest was still Xiang Liu’s. Poor Xiangliu sacrificed so much for Xiao Yao, then for his ideals, he fought valiantly in battle until the end despite knowing it’ll lead to his death.
Off topic, can I just say though, casting Tan Jianci to play Xiang Liu was pretty brilliant. He really immersed himself into the role of Xiang Liu and completely understood his character. And his eyes! His eyes alone reflected so much emotion. It’s certainly sad for fans of this ship, but this being a story about one heroine with many male leads, there are different ships for everyone.

Critique and Ratings
As with any popular drama, fans are bound to disagree with a lot of things. As it is, in-fighting between each of the cast’s fans is still an issue. But one thing everyone can probably agree on is that many are a bit salty with season 2 versus the first season which was generally praised.
On the one hand, Tu Shanjing fans kicked up a fuss about how his role appears to be significantly reduced and in certain cases, it seemed like he was just there to serve as a background for the other major players in the story. And remember the scene of him falling into the water? Fans criticised that it wasn’t done well and did not do justice to the actor’s hard work to film the scene. It was like he was just thrown into the water and that was that in the final cut. Tan Jianci meanwhile got the exact opposite as some whined about him getting more scenes added. Even Yang Zi’s role in the show didn’t get a free pass as fans grumbled production didn’t appear to care enough to allow Xiao Yao’s character to develop as it should’ve.

From complaints about the poorly done special effects to accusations that their faves’ characters were “shortchanged”, fans didn’t mince words. But despite all the drama, it’s interesting how the sequel still did well for itself in the ratings charts. Yang Zi made history as the first person on Tencent whose character Xiao Yao managed to break past 200 million. Deng Wei was the first male actor in 2024 to break past 100 million on the same platform for his role as Tushan Jing. Meanwhile, the show also had the most stars whose characters broke 9 on Vlinkage with Yang Zi, Deng Wei, Tan Jianci and Zhang Wanyi all breaking 9 the same day at one point.
