Max Zhang Jin returns for yet another round of performing on the fifth season of comeback survival show Call Me by Fire. For its premiere episode, the Chinese actor talked about a harrowing near death experience he had this April when he was off on holiday with his wife, Hong Kong actress Ada Choi, and their three children. It was his sheer will alone that kept him alive, he says.
Taking a break from practice, Max Zhang was chatting with another contestant when he recalled how he almost died whilst on holiday with his family. The 51-year-old actor shared he was standing by himself when he suffered a heart attack. Despite his wife and kids only being 10 meters away as they queued for a ride, he said he couldn’t even muster up the strength to call out. “I couldn’t speak at the time. It felt like there was an abyss and I was falling, with no one to turn to.” Max said he knew he won’t make it the minute he closed his eyes. “If I really closed my eyes at the time, I know I will leave the people dearest to me. The four people standing there who I cherish the most in this world.” He said all he could think of was that he had to survive.
“I can’t die here, in this foreign country and she (his wife) has three children. What will happen to her without her husband? I couldn’t stop thinking about that.” Ultimately, it was thanks to his incredible will to survive that he managed to pull through. When the family returned to Hong Kong, Max said he underwent a medical examination where the doctor confirmed that he could’ve died. Nonetheless, he said his “resurrection” changed his view completely and made him realise family is the most important thing.
