The 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards recently concluded. For an industry that’s been hoping for new blood, it just welcomed a new Best Actress with Michelle Wai clinching her first Hong Kong Film Best Actress Award for her standout performance in The Last Dance. The Best Actor went to veteran actor Sean Lau for his role in Papa. Though the evening was marked by the overwhelming success of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, The Last Dance, brought home 5 awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Chu Pak-hong, Best Screenplay, Best Original Film Music, and Best Original Film Song.
Michelle Wai’s portrayal of a complex character in The Last Dance solidified her status as one of Hong Kong’s most versatile actresses. As she graciously accepted the award, she expressed gratitude toward her family and team. The 40-year-old star added, “Today’s encouragement will drive me to continue pushing myself. I am the actress, Michelle Wai.” What was even more emotional for the newly wed actress was her doctor husband tearing up at her win.
However, the evening’s biggest winner was undoubtedly Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Directed by Soi Cheang, the film had a phenomenal night, sweeping up 9 major awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography.
