The Demon Hunter’s Romance (无忧渡), starring Allen Ren Jialun and Lareina Song Zu’er, has come to a close. For a show that had issues airing at first, it’s been a pleasant surprise – the two leads were just perfect for their roles with great chemistry and the fantasy romance manages to bring its own charm. It’s also directed by Lam Yuk-fan, of Eternal Love fame, which was when I really got into xianxia dramas.
But here we are at the end, and honestly, it feels like a miss that we didn’t get the happily-ever-after many viewers were expecting. This wasn’t the tragic star-crossed lovers type of story, so why not just give them the happy ending they deserved?
It doesn’t help that there are reports saying the original plan was apparently a happy ending, but streaming platform iQIYI reportedly followed AI suggestions deeming it “too idealistic” and pushed for a “more realistic and impactful open ending.” Uhh, given how many “bad” endings C-dramas love to do… when will they ever learn?
What Happened to Xuanye and Banxia?
In the final episodes of The Demon Hunter’s Romance, Xuanye uses the Chang Le Sword, causing everyone to forget his existence. Thankfully, Banxia’s memories come rushing back when she hears her past confession of love toward Xuanye through a magical shell. She runs to find him, but their reunion is brief. Xuanye admits he never intended to reunite with her because he must fulfill his duty to save Wuyou Realm. He stays to guard Wuyou, while Banxia remains in the human world — building her own life, surrounded by her loving family. It’s bittersweet. Xuanye knows humans don’t have endless twelve-year cycles to wait; Banxia’s life is fleeting compared to his endless demon lifespan.
They gather their old friends for one last night of laughter, pretending everything is as it once was — except no one remembers Xuanye except Banxia. But deep in their hearts, no matter where they are, they are each other’s one and only. “Even if we are apart, we will grow old under the same moon, missing each other from afar.”
While our couple cannot be together, there’s at least some closure on the family side: Xuanye is finally acknowledged by his father, who helps him with his mission. In the end, the couple say their goodbyes. Xuanye leaves, his figure disappears into the river portal, fading away as he goes to another realm.
Season 2 Rumors: Hope on the Horizon?
Meanwhile, there’s already buzz about a potential second season of The Demon Hunter’s Romance. Some sources claim it’s already being prepared and could start filming early next year with the original cast returning — but in reality, nothing has been officially announced. It’s true that Season 1 left several unexpected mysteries, like Banxia’s true identity, that could be explored in a sequel.
Not to mention, the novel it’s based on has a huge world building and stories still untapped. Ren Jialun and Song Zuer also said in livestreams that they hope to return for Season 2.
With The Demon Hunter’s Romance doing pretty well, maybe the investors will really greenlight a sequel. Or at the very least, fans are demanding the show to release an “epilogue” that has the happy ending. Rumors say they shot quite a few versions.

yeah what kind of ending was that lol. I’m so disappointed. If you skip the last 24 minutes of the drama, it’s still salvageable but honestly the whole drama was good except for the last half of episode 36. Why would we need a S2? Just give us a well-deserved happy warm ending to the drama.
