Once poised to become a top “post-95” actress, her career took a sharp downturn in 2023 due to accusations of tax evasion.
In August 2023, a whistleblower claimed that Song evaded taxes amounting to 45 million yuan, sparking widespread controversy. Brands pulled endorsements, her new dramas were shelved, and she vanished from public view. However, her studio responded in August 2024 with a detailed statement denying the tax evasion claims, confirming that no penalties were imposed after investigations. They also clarified that she had proactively reviewed past financial matters and resolved them under guidance.
Whatever the case, it looks like the hiatus the 26-year-old actress was forced to take has come to an end. There’s been speculation that her projects involving that have been on indefinite hold since her scandal are airing soon, and the first to confirm this is the costume fantasy drama The Demon Hunter’s Romance starring Allen Ren.
It follows Ban Xia (Song Zu’er), a wealthy young woman cursed—or gifted—with eyes that see through demon disguises. Branded as strange by those around her, her life takes a sharp turn when she discovers her sister-in-law is a demon. On the run, she crosses paths with the mysterious demon hunter Xuan Ye (Ren Jialun), who opens her eyes—literally and emotionally—to a hidden world. However, Xuan Ye has his own dark secret—he might not be entirely human either. It also stars Xuan Yan, Liu Ruogu, Liu Qiqi, He Lei, Wang Yiyao, Carlos Chan and Hanikezi.

Such a wildly anticipated drama left me feeling underwhelmed by the plot and the acting. No spoilers given. It just that the drama doesn’t resonate with me and I’m not impressed by is as I thought I would be but I will still stick it through to the end. (big sigh)
