After news of her falling ill and having her Weibo account locked, Chinese actress Rosy Zhao Lusi just came back on social media on January 1, 2025. While greeting everyone a happy new year, she shared a long post detailing her battle with depression and physical health challenges. In her message, the 26-year-old actress expressed her desire to shed light on mental health awareness while addressing the many rumors about her.
A Timeline of Struggles: From 2019 to 2024
Rosy Zhao Lusi disclosed that her mental health issues began in 2019 when she experienced symptoms of depression. She ignored her condition, attributing it to being “too sensitive.” In 2021, she started to notice physical symptoms like skin sensitivity and discomfort, prompting her to seek therapy. However, a cascade of personal tragedies and health problems in 2023—including pneumonia, nerve deafness, and the death of a loved one—intensified her struggles. By 2024, her symptoms evolved into severe physical manifestations such as dizziness, joint pain, and nausea, which she initially attributed to side effects from medication.
Among the pictures shared by Zhao Lusi whose height is 161 cm, many were shocked to see her weight drop to 36.9 kg, with the caption: “I didn’t have time to take a picture of my current weight, now it has increased to 41 kg, 82 catties, don’t worry…”
Revealing Past Traumas
In her post, Zhao Lusi also confirmed reports she was hit. She recounted being physically punished by a tutor during her school years. She added, “When I grew up, I was beaten again. I thought it was my fault that I didn’t get a role.” Her growing success gave her the courage to leave, but rumors and gossip continued to hound her saying she was only willing to stop “making a scene” after a “breaking fee.” Zhao Lusi said, “I never mentioned this illness before. I don’t want to turn my “getting sick” into what is now being called “creating news.” Zhao emphasized the importance of recognizing depression as an illness, not merely a mood that can be overcome by “thinking positively.” She called for greater awareness and support for mental health treatment, urging those in similar situations to prioritize their well-being.
Zhao Lusi’s Agency Issues Statement Amid Backlash
On the same day, Zhao Lusi’s agency Yinhekuyu Media also released a statement to express support, pledging to protect the actress’s health and address malicious rumors. They also said that they acknowledge and accept feedback, while apologizing for shortcomings in their work, and committing to resolving issues responsibly. They emphasize that there is no disagreement on work plans between the actress and the company. Nonetheless, fans have left comments wanting the agency to release the actress from her contract.

Zhao Lusi should just quit Chinese showbiz. Chinese entertainment, especially, is not for the faint of heart, with its toxicity. She is not the first person to be bullied and abused. She certainly won’t be the last. I do hope she makes a full recovery.

Oh goodness. Who are you to tell her what to do with her life? She chose it. She wants it . All the fame, the idolisation and all the money. What else can she do now to earn a living? Be an influencer? That’s a real step-down in status and even more stressful. Be a brand ambassador? No brand wants them if they are not “red” enough, Be an ordinary person with an ordinary job? She can’t anymore and she probably doesn’t have any other skills. Be a business woman? Even more cut-throat competition.
Why do people assume that celebrities can have their cake and eat it too, without leaving at least a pound of flesh behind. The entertainment industry is not for the faint of heart – that’s true for every country’s entertainment industry, even those that do not have an international presence, even those local pageants. It is my observation, that the C-industry is already much less toxic than some other countries’ ones.

I think she’s doing something bold and brave by bringing the spotlight on this issue so that eventually change will come instead of just sweep it under the rug like everyone else is doing. She’s a strong girl and I wish the best for her. I believe that even in China, if there’s enough attention on a bad practice, there will be things put in place to prevent the widespread systemic abuse that celebrities suffer in the course of doing their jobs. The Chinese care about their ‘face’ after all. I foresee that as the years go by, more and more people will open up about these kinds of bad practices forcing a change. Time will tell.

I guess I look at this differently! There are probably so many in this industry who have or are experiencing this problem. They just have kept it buried. NOW, Zhou Luisi brings this to the forefront. It is time this industry stops being accepting of abusive and/or bullying behavior. And for what? The making of a drama which many times is not that good! Where are the people who are supposed to be protecting these young people while they gather experience. Acting is a job, not their life. Zhou Luisi will get better. She will decide if this is what she wants to do. I have heard her say in interviews she loves acting! It is all the crap that comes with it, that is toxic in my opinion. And remember not all are bad, there are many good working with these young actors.
Out of bad comes good! Shine the light on this and help others who are young not be taken advantage of these power hungry, fame hungry people!
Support Luisi, pray for Luisi and wish her a speedy recovery!
Pray for other actors who are experiencing these situations, and hope that because of what Luisi experienced and exposed get help also.
