Squid Game Season 2: Bigger Games, Star-Studded Cast, and What’s Ahead in Season 3

The globally acclaimed series Squid Game has finally returned with its second season. Released on December 26, all seven episodes are now available for bingeing. The new season brings back the main protagonist Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, and has generated plenty of buzz. Gong Yoo’s special appearance, just like in the first season, had the actor going viral. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk also reunited the “surviving” original cast, including Wi Ha-Joon and Lee Byung-hun, alongside star-studded additions like Im Si-wan and T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyun).

Building on the intense, high-stakes narrative of the first season, Season 2 ups the ante with new games and heightened gore. The story once again revolves around desperate participants competing in deadly challenges for a staggering prize of 45.6 billion won (approximately $34 million USD). But losing still comes with the ultimate price—death.

Seong Gi-hun, who survived and won in the first season, reenters the sinister competition, determined to stop the brutal games. While the season maintains the trademark tension and emotional depth that defines Korean storytelling, some fans feel Gi-hun’s character lacks the authenticity of his earlier portrayal. Certain plot points have also been criticized as unconvincing. Instead of offering closure, this season leaves key questions unanswered, setting up a lead-in for Season 3.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed that Season 3 will continue Gi-hun and Front Man’s intertwined story. Originally planned as a single arc, the narrative was split into two seasons due to the number of episodes required. With seven episodes in Season 2, the episode count for the final chapter remains unknown. Squid Game Season 3, marking the conclusion of this hit K-drama, is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2025.
