The highly anticipated sequel to the uber popular Netflix series Squid Game is gearing up for its premiere date on December 26, 2024. And whilst news of its imminent release has everyone buzzin’, it’s a glimpse at one of its stars Park Sung-hoon in the show that’s raising some eyebrows.
We caught a glimpse at Park Sung-hoon’s character Hyun Joo aka Player 120 in the promos. What’s causing a bit of controversy though is that he appears with full makeup and shoulder-length hair. Many were surprised with the character he’s playing: a transgender woman who once served as a special forces soldier and who signed up to raise funds for gender-affirmation surgery. It’s certainly very different from the 39-year-old actor’s previous roles such as his second lead villain role in Queen of Tears. The actor describes his character as one who’s breaking down stereotypes and will serve as an inspiring character.
Mixed Reception
As expected, reception to his character and his “new look” remains divided. Whilst supportive fans applauded his courage to take on a controversial role, saying this would cement his versatility as an actor, others have expressed their disappointment. Many of the actor’s fans are also leaning towards the skeptical side saying it’s a big risk for him to be doing so. Just look at the backlash and criticism that met Nam Yoon-su who starred in the LGBTQ+ themed drama Love in the Big City. Conservative groups even clamoured for the cancellation of the series.
On the other hand, there’s also folks saying the show should’ve just cast a transgender actor to play the role. But then in a relatively conservative country like South Korea, how easy or (hard) would it be to find someone who’s not only willing to out themselves to the world but who also has the acting chops to play the role. Even if a transgender actress takes on the role, there’s every chance she may still face discrimination from society. Of course there’s also those who think the best option is to have an actress play a transgender female character. What do you guys think?
