It’s been only a few days since the new Netflix Original series Squid Game starring Lee Jung-jae and Park Hae-soo premiered on September 17, and the show has been generating a lot of buzz. It has become the first Korean drama to rank in 2nd on Netflix’s Top TV Shows Worldwide (as of Sep 20). The apocalyptic horror series Sweet Home was the previous record holder as it also broke into top 5 worldwide.
In Squid Game, 456 contestants living on the brink of desperation join a tournament that could potentially change their lives. The mechanics are simple and made up of childhood games except to lose equals death. At the end, the sole survivor will bring home a huge sum of money. Gong Yoo appears in the first episode for his cameo as the man who recruits Lee Jung-jae’s character as one of the players.
With its Battle Royal-esque story, the show is intense, bloody and keeps you on your toes. While it doesn’t seem to be for everybody given the mixed reception, it has certainly drawn attention. Actor Wi Ha-joon and fashion model turned Jung Ho Yeon who makes her acting debut in the series also star. Given the ending and the success of the show, it seems hopeful that Netflix would opt in towards making a second season.
