Guan Hongfeng / Guan Hongyu sits in the interrogation room, his smile sparking nostalgia as viewers feel that familiar thrill returning. Since Day and Night (白夜追凶) captivated audiences in China and internationally in 2017, fans have eagerly awaited a sequel to the story. Seven years later, the wait is finally over.
Day and Night Season 2 (白夜破晓) premiered on November 20 2024. It boasts the return of the main cast—albeit older. Pan Yueming, who turned 50 this year, reportedly filmed this sequel last year alongside Wang Longzheng and Liang Yuan to name a few. It’s heartwarming and nostalgic to see the cast reunited though the first episode already ushers in an emotional moment for fans of the original. Fei Qiming has once again drawn flak for his addition into the cast as some fans miss Lü Xiaolin, who played forensic doctor Gao Yanan in the first season and question the decision to leave the character out.
The sequel continues the story of Day and Night, though it’s understandable if the plot feels like a distant memory given the years that have passed. The original revolved around lead investigator Guan Hongfeng’s secret mission to clear his twin brother, Guan Hongyu, a fugitive wrongly accused of a crime he didn’t commit. The first season ended on a high note, and fans can only hope the new season lives up to its predecessor.
