“Are You the One” 柳舟记 has been entertaining so far. It starts with Zhang Wanyi, who plays a prince again, facing off against enemies, catching an arrow with his bare hand just before it pierces his throat. The identity of the masked assassin isn’t revealed, but it’s clearly a woman—likely the heroine, played by Wang Churan.
A Light Comedy
After this gripping start, the tone shifts dramatically as we move into a small town where the heroine, Liu Mian Tang, is just a housewife with missing memories. She’s told she has a loving husband in Cui Jiu, but something feels off. Their interactions are intriguing—him trying to maintain his facade, while she, sharp as a tack, nearly sees through him multiple times. The story turns into a light comedy, with most of the action in the first few episodes taking place in the town and the focus mostly on the main couple’s banter.
Premiere Ratings
Before the show aired, there were plenty of promos, and I wasn’t sure how it would turn out. But it’s surprisingly good! While hot search results can be bought, I find myself agreeing with the trending hashtags, which are positive and praising the show. Although competition in dramaland isn’t as fierce these days due to Olympic season, which just ended, this show topped the ratings charts on its premiere yesterday, August 12—and I’m kind of hooked.
Zhang Wanyi Finally Gets the Girl
“Are You the One’s” not outright comedy, but it’s a lighter watch, and the couple’s dynamic is sweet from the get-go especially since we’re still in the early stages where the “married couple” first learns to fall in love. Who knew Zhang Wanyi, who never got the girl in his previous dramas, hence being so angst-ridden, could be funny? He’s the black-bellied prince at court but at home, he’s a husband trying to keep up appearances.
When his not-so-good cover as a porcelain merchant, start to falter since he clearly knows nothing about the craft, he has no choice but to say it’s because he’s actually a “good-for-nothing” husband. And that moment when he goes into panic mode to stop her from beginning to “undress” because she misunderstood him—it’s absolutely hilarious and they were both so cute.
Wang Churan is certainly bouncing back from the backlash from Fireworks of My Heart last year. The 25-year-old actress really is pretty especially in historical dramas. She fits the part of the gentle wife perfectly, but even amnesia can’t hide her character’s badass-ery.
“Are You the One” Synopsis
Adapted from the novel “Hidden Charm” 娇藏 by Kuang Shang Jia Kuang 狂上加狂, the story follows Liu Mian Tang, the leader of Yang Shan, who was injured and saved by Cui Xing Zhou, the Prince of Huai Yang. When she wakes up with amnesia, she mistakes him for her husband. He decides to keep up the charade, hoping she’ll lead him to the bandits he’s been hunting. But what will happen when their true identities are revealed? The novel it’s based on has comedic elements, but I just know it’s going to turn into a dog-blood drama. Once she finds out he’s been lying to her this whole time, I’ll definitely be there to watch it all unfold.
