In recent years, several “second generation” actors have stepped into the limelight, including Chen Kaige and Chen Hong’s son, Chen Feiyu, Guo Degang’s son, Guo Qilin, Zhang Kaili’s daughter, Zhang Keying, and Yan Ni’s daughter, Zou Yuanqing. Ashley Zhang Haolian 張鎬濂, a talent under Yuehua Entertainment, is yet another “second generation” actor who’s breaking into the business.
The 23-year-old actor has just kicked off filming for a short drama called Green Lotus Tribulation 青莲劫 where he takes a special starring role. It drew attention as he is the son of ’80s/90s heartthrob, Max Mok Siu-chung, and Hong Kong actress Cathering Hung. Ashley Zhang who already had his hair and makeup done up in historical style appears in photos with his co-stars. While many may recognize his parents, Ashley is starting his own path in the industry, having participated in survival shows like All for One and the currently airing Asia Super Young.
Ashley’s family dynamics have often been a subject of interest. Following Max and Catherine’s controversial breakup in 2000 after three years of dating, Catherine gave birth to Ashley that same year. Catherine eventually remarried Chinese actor Zhang Danfeng, and Ashley took his stepfather’s name. The family expanded further with the addition of sister, Yannes Zhang, from Catherine and Zhang Danfeng’s marriage. Max Mok, on the other hand, has a daughter, Mok Zhi Yan, from a subsequent marriage that ended in divorce in 2016.
