After skyrocketing to fame through the hit drama Blossom, Meng Ziyi has continued to appear in costume dramas, most recently returning to the small screen opposite He Yu in Blossoms of Power as a heroine who gets another chance at life under a new identity. Furthermore, she also has upcoming costume dramas opposite Dylan Wang and Li Yunrui. It’s led to criticisms that her roles have become too similar, which the actress addressed.
In a recent interview with Ruxi, Meng Ziyi revealed her thought process when it comes to choosing roles. The 30-year-old actress said, “I’m someone who gets deeply attached to things. If I like a restaurant, I’ll always order the same dish. I’m the same when it comes to scripts. I tend to be deeply moved by the same type of female characters. I genuinely love them and feel I can portray them well.” However, she said she has realized it is time to make changes. “As I’m getting older, I also want new breakthroughs and to try different kinds of roles. Sometimes I have to painfully turn down scripts that feel too similar. Just because a role moves me doesn’t mean I have to play it.”
Meng Ziyi said she has begun recommending some of those projects to her friends in the industry. “I’ll tell them, ‘I read this script, it’s excellent.” She said it helps make up for some of the regret as she hopes good projects can make their way to audiences even if she’s not the one acting in them. Looking ahead, Meng revealed she hopes to take on suspense and Republican-era dramas, genres she has never explored before. She noted that her recent releases have all been costume dramas, which is why she understands how viewers feel they are becoming repetitive. Meanwhile, Meng Ziyi also has upcoming drama Sanxian Mihui (三线谜回), set in modern times, where she had cut her hair short for the role. She has been trying to venture into other genres and feels she will simply try even harder so that audiences can see it.

she should try comedy role to see if her acting is any different. She’s pretty, but her acting is boring. I can’t even finish Blossom in Power.
Yarnie
she should also consider changing her make up team. Her make up esp.lips always in same or very similar shade and type that it feels as if she filmed one drama and started next one in same day…without changing anything.Even in fight /chaotic scenes her make doesnt change l cant not even…
Lisa
I agree with you. I feel like she always has that same shade of red. her styling largely looks the same. If she just showed me a still shot from one drama to another, I probably could not tell you which drama it was from.

Nothing wrong with acting in many costume dramas. They are opportunities for her to improve her acting skills, Just because the story might be similar, or it’s another tragic heroine, it doesn’t mean her acting should be exactly the same. That’s not skilled interpretation of the character. Even if she acts in contemporary dramas, but her acting skills remains the same, she will still be just as boring.
So first advice is improve her acting skills.

she’ll do well in comedy. she’s always kinda funny on that Saturday show.
but she needs to be able to let the idol burden go. be ugly, emote, display expressions she hasn’t already used. she needs something to break out of her shell
