Chinese costume drama Jiang Men Du Hou (将门独后) has finally announced the start of filming on February 20, 2026. Dylan Wang Hedi and Meng Ziyi star as male lead Xie Jingxing and female lead Shen Miao. Adapted from Qian Shan Cha Ke’s very popular novel The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage (重生之将门毒后), the drama had both buzz, fans and criticisms from the start with either complaints about the male lead, the female lead or both not fitting their characters. Some book fans weren’t happy about the project being turned into a live-action, yet amidst all the noise and fanwars, the show has proceeded as planned. It is directed by Yin Tao (Love and Redemption) and jointly produced by Tencent Video, New Classics Television, and Yuewen Pictures.
The original is a revenge-themed novel that follows the heroine, a fallen empress, who gets a do-over after she and her family face ruin despite everything she has done to help the emperor. This time around, she is determined to protect what’s dear to her and she has the Xie marquis by her side. It definitely feels like a female-oriented story though Wang Hedi’s solo promotional materials being released 10 minutes earlier than Meng Ziyi’s during the cast announcement has some wondering whether the story will indeed see changes to highlight the male lead.
Nevertheless, the casting is already set, so major changes seem unlikely. Yes, Meng Ziyi carries a more mature aura than the 14-year-old Shen Miao from the novel and everyone will always have something to say, but adaptations always come with tweaks. Maybe it’s best to wait and see how it plays out. For now, at least in the first poster, both leads are looking pretty good.

If they actually used a 14 year old there would be complaints. Meng Ziyi does have very mature vibes which isn’t so bad if the character has a mature personality. but i also feel her styling makes her look older. maybe they will tame the styling like makeup to make her look more her age.
