Chinese actress Andy Yang Zi has just won Best Actress at the 31st Shanghai TV Festival Magnolia Awards for her portrayal of Bai Ju in the drama Born to be Alive. This marks the 33-year-old actress’ first win, which also makes her the first post-90’s generation actress to win the award.
Yang Zi was visibly emotional, already crying as she walked up to the podium after her name as announced, but not forgetting to clarify the rumors that she lost 15 jin just for the role, she says she didn’t. During her acceptance speech, the former child actress thanked her parents for supporting her dream throughout the years: “Since I was five years old, after I told them I wanted to become an actress. They didn’t crush my dream but supported me the whole way. These years, no matter what challenges, contempt or difficulties. My parents would always say, “My daughter is the best”… Today, I won this award, your daughter has not let you down.” This was Yang Zi’s third nomination for the Best Actress award after Lost You Forever and Flourished Peony. Previously, she was also nominated for Ode to Joy where she played a supporting role.
The Best Actor award went to Yu Hewei for Silent Honor, his second time to win. Li Xue won Best Director for Born to be Alivee. Best Drama went to Swords Into Plowshares.

Congrats to Yang Zi! Her portrayal of Bai Ju was deserving of an award. All the nominated actresses were also great.

Sorry, I can’t see how she could be best actress. The character “Bai Ju” was not a particularly complicated character to play. In fact, it was a rather typical portrayal of a strong female character.
Sometimes, I think that there are certain “riggings” going on in all these awards ceremonies. Or maybe, last year, there was a dearth of meaningful female characters screened and there wasn’t any stiff competition.

I’m so happy for her! I’ve enjoyed Yang Zi’s dramas ever since first watching her in Battle of Changsha. Congratulations~~

After high ziban a.k.a douban scores finally her capital worked and she got the award she paid for. from rushing to air her mediocre drama BTBA so it would fit right in time for the award season + brainwashing everyone with marketing she was good in it despite lowest viewership compared to other nominated works then deleting the water queen allegations to prevent it reaching hot searches. her capital really did well

You sound like you need to touch grass and stop listening to an echo chamber of bitter, jealous fans of a rival actress whom I’ll do the courtesy of not naming here. Peace out.

cry me a river water queen fan

So uncultured, as representative of your fandom. Keep lying to yourself to make yourself feel better. This insecurity is actually quite telling. If someone is riding high, they don’t fret when others do well.

Congratulations Yang Zi!! This feels like an acknowledgement for all of her past works than just this one drama as her other dramas performed way better than this and she has done some amazing works.

I hate these plastic magazine cover looks. Did anyone see the movie “Yolo”? In it, Yang Zi has these skin creases around her mouth like an aged person would, not this someone who looks barely turned 18 by Photoshop manipulation.

I don’t know whether she looks 18 in the above pictures, but she sure looks like Jin Xing now.
The Read
After 4 nominations, it’s been a long time coming. The general public are mostly happy for her, the small vocal dissenters mostly are fans of other actresses in the post-90s group. They keep claiming she has backers without any proof. If she has high drama ratings, they claim it’s all water data. If she has mid ratings, they claim it is the lowest rated drama ever and proof she’s not popular. When she trends on Weibo, they claim it’s all paid water armies. When their own fav’s drama underperforms, they claim sabotage by the platform. Fan logic = every actress I hate has fake popularity and zero acting skills but every instance of my fav not getting a nomination or low ratings is because there is a conspiracy.

woohoo. congrats to this queen!
