Former actress Joey Wong has licensed the AI rights to her likeness to a popular online game, making her the first Hong Kong actress to do so. The 59-year-old screen goddess was literally the top star during her heyday, before she chose to retire from the public eye 22 years ago to lead a quiet life in Canada. The online game has created a character based on her likeness from the peak of her career in her 20s and 30s. While the use of AI in the entertainment industry has been quite controversial, her choice drew support from those who feel it’s a reasonable option, especially for veteran actors to allow fans an opportunity to revisit the image they once loved.
Joey Wong is widely regarded as one of the most iconic beauties in the industry. In a short clip, AI can be seen recreating Joey Wong’s stunning look from her role in A Chinese Ghost Story. According to reports, the licensing agreement covers not only the AI-generated promotional video but also the creation of an in-game NPC modeled after Wong. Nevertheless, many remain divided about the use of AI, arguing that the recreation has “the appearance but not the spirit.”
