Liu Xueyi and Meng Ziyi’s fresh pairing for the costume historical The Princess’s Gambit 桃花映江山 is about to hit screens as part of this summer’s C-drama lineup, securing a premiere of June 25, 2025 on Tencent. Adapted from Bai Lu Cheng Shuang’s web novel of the same name, what begins as a political marriage between enemies soon evolves into something deeper, and what we see on the surface often isn’t the full story.
A “Corrupt” Prime Minister and a Princess
Liu Xueyi plays the seemingly corrupt prime minister Shen Zaiye. Considering his previous roles playing characters whose cold countenance hides a soft heart, the choice to cast him for the character of Zaiye is practically a no brainer. Just when we’ve all written him off as the master manipulator who engages in shady business, Shen Zaiye will end up surprising everyone because at the core of his character is a need to serve.
Meanwhile, Meng Ziyi drew a lot of attention playing the lead role in 2024’s Blossom. In The Princess’s Gambit, she plays the Beiyuan Kingdom’s fallen princess Jiang Taohua who was forced to enter into a political marriage with the Qi Kingdom’s prime minister. Her mettle is truly tested as she matches wits not only with her husband Zaiye, but with residents of the prime minister’s mansion as well as the political intrigues and machinations within the imperial court.
This being a Bai Lu Cheng Shuang piece, book fans who are familiar with the author’s style know that the author makes sure to end her stories with a neat little bow. Does that mean a satisfying ending is to be expected? That all boils down to whether the drama adaptation will stick to the original plot of the story.
The Princess’s Gambit also stars Princess at Large and Love of Nirvana actor Gao Han as the second male lead Gong Zi Jing, Moonlight Mystique actresses Liu Lingzi as Meng Zhenzhen and Fan Jingwen as Xiang Qingying as well as Bian Cheng, Wang Jiaxuan and Xu Jingya.

Based on some shorts, I don’t see the chemistry to even try 🫤 LXY needs to go back to being a support, he just doesn’t have it to be main lead, sorry. He might be able to act, but u don’t see the passion nor the drive under the way he portrayed his characters, at least I haven’t. It’s a waste of MYZ, she is beautiful in this, but the atmosphere between these two are as dry as a cold morning in the middle of winter 🫤

Can’t explain it but Meng Ziyi and Liu Xueyi are both very attractive but for some reason, I find them very boring to watch now. Perhaps they both have had very similar styling in many dramas and it just doesn’t look fresh.

It has more to do with the chemistry. You need sizzling chemistry for any cdrama these days, because 95% of them are not fresh topic/tropes. Without the chemistry, it’s boring. Even the chemistry between main n support also helps moving the plot along.

Watched all that is realized until now. probably episode 10- Chemistry is perfect for the episodes context- later episodes clearly show more intensity. Great cast. Not sure what the other opinions are referring to. Excellent drama- if you don’t watch it , it’s your loss
