Xiao Zhan Headlines Daylight Entertainment’s New Spy Drama “Spying”

Youku just gave audiences a sneaky little peek at what’s on the pipeline in their recent 2025 Spring Conference. Amongst these, Xiao Zhan fans will be over the moon to know that their favourite actor is back with a brand new Republican spy series titled Spying谍报上不封顶. Jointly produced by Youku and Daylight Entertainment who is well-known for producing quality dramas such as Nirvana in Fire, All Is Well, or even the spy war hit series The Disguiser, you know it’s gonna be good.

Spying marks Xiao Zhan’s first foray into the spy genre. And when it comes to his casting, Daylight Entertainment has only good things to say. “As a popular young actor, Xiao Zhan has taken on distinct roles in various film and TV projects over the years since his debut. His chameleon like abilities to play different characters whether upright or resolute, sunny or lively, has made audiences fully recognise his ability to shape and grasp whatever character he takes on. We look forward to see what he can bring to the character of Ren Shaobai.”

Funnily enough, with Xiao Zhan as the only actor named in its just released poster, Netizens have already taken to describing the series as a “big male lead” drama; a term also used to refer to dramas such as Gong Jun’s Tales of Dark River and Yang Yang’s The Immortal Ascension where only the male leads are named.

Adapted from the popular web novel of the same name by Sang Zhizhi, Spying is set in 1948 Nanjing and focuses on the story of Ren Shaobai, a secret member of the Chinese Communist Party and an intelligence agent outwardly working for the Kuomintang’s Ministry of National Defense.
