Another one of Youku’s new adventure fantasy dramas on the pipeline is the Song Weilong and Liu Haocun led The Seven Relics of Omen 七根心简. The supernatural series definitely calls for a strong stomach – think blood thirsty wriggly creatures that leech onto a host and forces them to do their evil bidding. Don’t let that put you off though as the story promises to be very interesting.

Meanwhile, I’m also getting Candle in the Tomb-esque vibes from some of the scenes. After all, it’s based on another novel by Wei Yu, the writer behind supernatural themes like Rattan and Love on the Turquoise Land. If anything, a leather clad Liu Haocun with her slick “new look” that’s so different from her usual intrepid adventurer get-up in the show has me intrigued. Does that mean she also fell prey to the omens?!

The Seven Relics of Omen’s unique plot tells the story of mysterious creatures who in ancient times were sealed into wooden tablets crafted from a sacred tree. And whilst guardians have ensured these creatures remain sealed for generations, an unexpected incident involving a dog revives the creatures in the tablets. What follows is a string of bizarro murders.

By chance, a “Phoenix Squad” is formed by our protagonists Luo Ren (Song Weilong) and Mu Dai (Liu Haocun) together with Yi Wanshan (Ao Ruipeng), Yan Hong Sha (Wang Yiting) and Cao Yanhua (Zhang Yichi) to thwart the plans of these “ill omens” and seal them back into the sacred tablets. From triggering evil thoughts buried deep in their hearts to reanimating the corpses it takes over and controls, the Phoenix Squad clearly has their work cut out for them.
