Youku’s highly anticipated historical suspense drama The Vendetta of An (长安二十四计) has officially wrapped filming. Starring Cheng Yi, the series has been generating buzz since its announcement given previous hits like Love and Redemption and Mysterious Lotus Casebook. What really caught my attention, Cheng Yi’s striking gray hair! It’s not his first time having long “white” hair for a costume drama, but the wig he has now looks amazing on him. The actor has black hair for the most part so I’m guessing the weight of vengeance turned his hair white?
Cheng Yi leads the cast as Xie Huai’an, a seemingly ordinary county registrar who is, in reality, a secret operative under Emperor Ji Wuyang (played by Liu Yijun). Tasked with dismantling a growing rebellion, he navigates a treacherous game of deception and survival. In the recently released wrap-up special, Cheng Yi’s character chillingly declares, “On the path of revenge, I cannot allow a single enemy a good ending.” It’s definitely a plus that it has the production team, known for The Longest Day in Chang’an, meticulously crafting another setting that vividly captures the tension between the imperial court and the chaotic times.
The drama boasts an exceptional supporting cast, featuring seasoned actors like Wang Jinsong, Ni Dahong, and Zhang Hanyu, who bring depth to the court’s intense power struggles. Meanwhile, Zhou Qi, Tong Mengshi and Xu Lu make up the younger cast. It also features a lot of stars making special appearances such as Ye Zuxin, Huang Jue, Bian Cheng, Wang Zixuan, Chen Yao and many more.
As one of Youku’s S+ flagship dramas, perhaps The Vendetta of An, which should be on post-production now, can make it to the small screen in 2025?
