Last year, Taiwanese singer-songwriter Liu Jiachang was undergoing prostate surgery. Sad to say the 83-year-old finally lost the fight against his illness. His family meanwhile released a statement saying they will be following his wishes for a simple send off and won’t be holding a farewell ceremony.
Family Drama While He Was Still Living
It seems though that even in death, drama continues to dog the late Liu Jiachang, at least when it comes to his estranged son Jeremiah Zhang with ex-wife Chen Chen. In a recent post on social media, Jeremiah lamented how his father’s family was very tight lipped regarding the details of his father’s funeral and complained that the family was ignoring him.
“As a son I just wanted to send my father off for the last time, but I didn’t get a response.” He said since he wanted to respect his relatives wishes to honour his late father’s request of keep things low-key and simple, he did not make public the details he’d discovered regarding the funeral arrangements. He did warn though that “if he cannot get a complete reply (regarding the pertinent details), he will be forced to announce the time and place, making use of the media to verify it.”

“No Direct Relationship to the Liu Family”
In response to his remarks, Liu Jiachang’s family simply stated: “as for the remarks of the man named Zhang who is concerned about his father’s funeral, we are unable to respond because he has no direct relationship with the Liu family. We kindly ask everyone to understand and determine the authenticity of the relevant information.”
Faced with this response, Jeremiah says all he can do now is express his understanding and respect. “I reckon I’m left with no choice but to convey what I want to tell my father here: rest in peace”. He then signed it “son Liu Ziqian (*kowtow)”.
It can be remembered that the late singer-songwriter has been at odds with his ex and their son, even accusing them of greedily coveting his money and properties. One of Liu Jiachang’s accusations against his ex was how she supposedly brainwashed their son to the point that he changed his name in 2019 from Liu Ziqian 劉子千 to take his mother’s surname Zhang in his new name Zhang Liheng 章立衡. Jeremiah also uploaded a copy of his HKIC to disprove this and show that he still carried his father’s last name Liu when he was issued an identity card dated February 12, 2019.

Maybe with dad passing away, he is now looking to fight for inheritance. Thus he kept surname legally. If there are further news from this ‘son’ it will not surprise me.

What’s the story? Was he not his biological son? Did he ever disown him? Liu and Chen Chen divorced when Jeremy was only a year old. How could he even be a party to the parents’ conflict? Many families have internal conflicts but inheritance laws apply regardless if the deceased did not make a valid will.
