Whether good or bad, Singer 2024 (歌手2024), the newest season of the long-running Chinese singing competition Singer, previously known as I Am a Singer, has definitely gotten people talking with its new live-singing format. It is helmed by Hong Xiao, who has produced and directed other hit shows like Infinity and Beyond. The battle to find the “King” of Singer concluded last night. Na Ying emerged as the victor.
However, her win was accompanied by complaints that the show is scripted. A clip from the show of Kazakh singer and songwriter Dimash whispering to Faouzia something along the lines of, “They invited me to sing, they said, it must be Chinese before you,” drew speculation that the winner was pre-decided and that it’s based on seniority and nationality. Some felt bad for contestants like Moroccan-Canadian singer-songwriter and musician Faouzia who consistently perfomed well. But then again, some feel Na Ying’s win is well-deserved as she indeed is known to be a strong singer. Singer 2024 also seemingly addressed the issue on its social media when they wrote, “Definitely real, no need to be defensive… Music can’t lie.” Let’s take a look at the winners from each season of Singer.
