Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau is hoping to unlock another achievement in his long and illustrious showbiz career. “I hope to become a director before 2026. If I can’t do it (by then), it probably won’t ever happen.” With so many feathers already under his cap, you’d think the veteran star would be happy to sit back and enjoy the fruits of his labour. But nope, not Andy. Inspired by his idol Clint Eastwood, the beloved actor hopes to become an outstanding producer, director and actor just like the Hollywood star. The 62-year-old star who’s also an established singer will be busy preparing for his concert in 2024, so the earliest he can venture into directing will probably be 2025.
Aspiring to be a Director
Andy currently has two movies out – The Goldfinger which reunites him with Tony Leung and the crime action film I Did It My Way 潛行 which he also produced. Whilst promoting the film, co-star Gordon Lam jested that Andy was “a producer who was delayed by his status as an actor”. However, it looks like his co-star has even bigger dreams.
Andy Lau revealed that he began dreaming of sitting on the director’s seat whilst he was still filming Dance of a Dream 愛君如夢 many many years ago –22 years to be exact. However his full schedule didn’t exactly leave him room to prepare. The actor also let slip that he already has three scripts he was mulling over but reveals that what he really really wants to direct is The Return of the Condor Heroes 神鵰俠侶. This is not entirely surprising as the piece seems to hold special memories for him having acted on the TV version of the tale and also marking the first one he invested in.
Andy has long been known as one of Hong Kong’s Heavenly Kings. With a stellar career dominating the Cantopop scene as well as film and TV, really, is there anything that he can’t do? With two goals already ticked off his list – actor and producer, it seems him adding the role of director in his CV is just a matter of time.
