Back to the Past 尋秦記, the long-awaited film continuation of the 2001 TVB classic A Step into the Past, has finally announced its release date: December 31, 2025. Led once again by Louis Koo, Raymond Lam, Jessica Hsuan, Sonija Kwok and Joyce Tang, the original cast reunites after 24 years, a feat that fans are calling “a miracle of sincerity” in Hong Kong cinema.
The show has been teasing promos of familiar characters that have no doubt triggered a wave of nostalgia. Louis Koo’s iconic time-traveller Hong Siu-lung, Raymond Lam as the ambitious Ying Ching, better known in history as Emperor Qin Shi Huang, along with beloved figures such as Kam Ching, Wu Ting-fong, Sin Yau, and even supporting roles like Wong Man Piu’s Tang Yik, Jimmy Au’s To Fong and Power Chan’s Lee See. It looks like the story will take us once more to the turbulent era of Qin’s conquest of the Six States, revealing Hung Siu-lung’s peaceful life before he is once again pulled into power struggles while confronting old grievances with his “protege” Ying Ching. He’ll face life-altering choices, including whether he can finally return to the modern world.
After so many years, everyone’s aged up in their forties and fifties but it feels just right especially with the trailer revealing that 20 years have also passed in the story. For fans, it’s the ultimate fan service. Only time will tell how the film will do, but if it brings the same action-packed humor, it’s going to be good.
