Taiwanese entertainment industry has once again been rocked by another crackdown on celebrities evading military enlistment. Actors Chen Bolin, Hsiu Chieh-kai, Energy member Joe Chang Shu-wei, and more, were taken from their homes early morning on October 21, 2025, for questioning by police. This marks the third wave of arrests in the investigation that began earlier this year, centering around actor Darren Wang, who was accused of paying NT$3.6 million (approx US$117,000) to a criminal ring to falsify medical records and evade military service.
Authorities aim to uncover a “military service evasion” operation that has been offering services to entertainers allowing them to use fake medical documents to secure exemptions or early discharges.
Chen Bolin, best known for his role as Li Daren in In Time With You, was reportedly at home with his longtime girlfriend Chen Ting-Hsuan when authorities arrived. He was exempted from service in 2011 for asthma and high blood pressure, but the main suspect in the case claimed to have “helped” him obtain that exemption. The authenticity of Chen’s medical certificate is now under judicial review.
Meanwhile, actor Hsiu Chieh-kai, widely regarded as a “family man”, served five months of alternative service in 2016 before being discharged early due to his wife’s pregnancy. According to Taiwanese media, he has admitted to paying NT$150,000 (around US$4,800) to falsify a high blood pressure diagnosis in an attempt to obtain an exemption from regular service. His actress-wife Alyssa Chia was away filming in Xiamen when police came for him.
