If psychological thrillers are your jam, perhaps Youku’s upcoming Confessions 沉默的审判 might be the one for you. The series is produced by the same team behind the Taiwanese black comedy thriller The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon which featured Ethan Ruan and Gingle Wang who also star in this one. Not gonna lie, the black and white posters with blood red script alone were enough to give me the creeps.
Confessions’ story stems from a bombing and kidnapping case that rocked Taipei two decades earlier in 2004. The tragedy linked the fate of three unrelated families, sowing the seeds of hatred and resentment that grew for two generations. At the beginning of the trailer, Ethan Ruan is pictured looking confused and tearful. The scene then transitions to Gingle Wang’s blood covered face as she smiles strangely at the camera. As each character is introduced, first looking normal then looking so much darker, the effect is suspenseful, emphasising the drama’s theme that explores the oft hidden darker side of humanity.
Aside from the gripping plot, the cast is a veritable list of who’s who in Taiwanese entertainment with many Taipei Film Award, Golden Bell and Golden Horse nominees and winners. There’s Nikki Hsieh, Chen Yiwen, Alyssa Chia, Joseph Chang and Vivian Sung just to name a few.
