South Korean actor Lee Seung-gi has announced that he and his wife, Lee Da-in, have officially severed ties with her family. When the couple married in April 2023, many of the actor’s fans opposed the relationship and advised him to break up, largely due to Lee Da-in’s father’s history of financial scandals. Lee Seung-gi — who defended his wife at the time, asserting that “she didn’t choose her parents” and that she was “the best choice he could make” — also faced heavy public criticism.
Cutting Ties with the In-Laws
On April 29, Lee Seung-gi released a statement through his agency, Big Planet Made Entertainment, saying, “With a heavy heart, I share this message and express my apologies. During the retrial, my father-in-law was fined for his past illegal activities, but he has recently been indicted again for similar offencses.”
Lee Seung-gi apologized, stating that although he initially trusted his in-laws, he now realizes his judgment was flawed. “I deeply reflect on my previous rash statements,” he said. He emphasized that illegal actions must be properly punished and extended a sincere apology to the victims harmed by the past incidents.
In 2016, Lee Da-in’s father Lee Hong-heon was convicted of making false disclosures about alleged Hong Kong capital investments to inflate stock prices. Although he was initially sentenced to four years in prison and fined heavily, he later appealed and was acquitted. However, last June, the Supreme Court ordered a retrial. At that time, Lee Da-in’s mother, veteran actress Kyeon Mi-ri, was also a major shareholder in the same company.
Lee Seung-gi explained that the breach of trust within the family had become too great to repair, leading him and Lee Da-in to the difficult decision to cut ties. Despite the controversy, the married couple has recently embraced parenthood, welcoming the birth of their daughter on February 5, 2024.
