A scene from Hong Kong film The Last Dance

Dayo Wong’s The Last Dance (破地獄) has cemented its place as the highest-grossing local film in Hong Kong’s history surpassing 2023’s A Guilty Conscience also headlined by actor-comedian Dayo Wong and 2024’s Twilight of the Warrior: Walled In. More than just a commercial hit, the film has sparked discussions about its authentic portrayal of the funeral industry. Dayo Wong’s character, Dominic, who transitions from a wedding planner to a funeral director, may seem like a fictional twist, but the role is rooted in real life.

From Weddings to Funerals: A Unique Perspective

The film’s funeral consultant, William Pun, served as the inspiration behind the protagonist’s journey though he said he wasn’t in debt like the main character. William, who entered the industry at 28, started as a wedding planner before joining the funeral business. His decade-long career provided much of the material for the movie, including the intricate embalming cases depicted onscreen.

William shares that funerals are simpler than weddings due to fewer demands from clients. “At a wedding, everyone has opinions, but for funerals, people rarely comment,” he explains. Despite its reputation for being lucrative, the funeral business has its struggles. William clarifies that earnings are case-based, and many in the industry supplement their income with side jobs.

As for the film, William praised Wong’s dedication to portraying the role realistically. Dayo Wong observed and practiced the procedures tirelessly, ensuring his performance resonated with authenticity. This meticulous attention to detail underscores why The Last Dance has struck such a chord with audiences.
