Wuxia film The Legend of the Condor Heroes: The Great Hero 射雕英雄传侠之大者 has officially announced its release date for January 29, 2025, the first day of the Lunar New Year. Directed by Tsui Hark, with Xiao Zhan and Zhuang Dafei in lead roles, the film promises to reignite the grandeur of classic Chinese martial arts cinema.
Adapted from Louis Cha’s The Legend of the Condor Heroes, the story follows Guo Jing (played by Xiao Zhan), a young man shaped by the turbulence of war and personal loss. Under the guidance of martial arts masters, he acquires legendary skills and fights alongside Huang Rong (portrayed by Zhuang Dafei) to protect the Southern Song Dynasty’s borders amidst chaos and conflict with the Mongol army.
The film’s teaser unveiled the melody from “You’re the Best in the World,” the song from the 1983 TV adaptation. This is yet another big-budget epic in the costume genre to be slated for Spring Festival 2025 in Chinese theaters. It follows fantasy film Creation of the Gods 2, which also confirmed its release date for 2025. While we’re not seeing promos that feature the cast in action, the mystery definitely adds to the interest. Given Xiao Zhan’s star power, many are no doubt looking forward to watch his adaptation of the classic wuxia.
