Vivian Sung on Showbiz Hiatus and Moving to the U.S.: “The Hardest Yet Most Rewarding Birthday Gift

Taiwanese actress Vivian Sung recently talked about her bold decision to put her showbiz career on hiatus and move alone to the U.S., sharing how this journey has been the “best birthday gift” to herself. Rising to stardom for her role in the 2015 rom-com Our Times and following it up with more successes such as Oh No! Here Comes Trouble in 2023, Vivian Sung celebrated her 32nd birthday this year in Los Angeles, marking a significant change in her life.

The actress had dreamed of experiencing life in America for over a decade. She described how many had praised her bravery for temporarily setting aside her career to pursue new opportunities. “I just wanted to step out of my comfort zone and explore more possibilities,” she explained. However, the reality proved to be far from the glamorous Hollywood image she once imagined. Instead of luxurious brunches or meeting celebrities on the street, she found herself spending four days just to set up her new home, taking expensive driving lessons, and having to translate local English online.

A particular struggle she highlighted was the challenge of getting around in Los Angeles without a car. Despite her initial anxiety, her driving instructor, a 65-year-old grandfather, helped her find confidence with his cheerful attitude and a phrase he often repeated, “Ooooo-kiiii-do-kiiii,” which reminded her of the “Hakuna Matata” mantra from The Lion King.

Reflecting on her move, Sung realized that every choice involves sacrifices but also allows for appreciating the present. “Be a Survivor!” Sung wrote, concluding her heartfelt message as she embraced this new chapter in her life.
