Former actor Michael Lam, who became a monk in 2009, was recently spotted with Hong Kong actor Spencer Leung who shared their photo together and wrote, “Fortunate to meet Master Yan Wai. Learning from the master, I will diligently walk the path of spiritual practice, humbly continue on this journey, and keep giving.”
The image shows a refreshed and clean-cut Lam, appearing much more youthful. Previously, fans had spotted the 46-year-old Lam with a greying beard. The former actor who starred in many Hong Kong movies in the 90s and early 2000’s is best known for playing a gangster in Ekin Cheng’s Young & Dangerous. However, in 2009, Lam left the Hong Kong entertainment industry to pursue a religious path, becoming a monk at Tsz Shan Monastery and adopting the name “Guo Hong Shi Yan Wei.” His transformation from a rugged actor to a gentle monk has gotten many commenting on his peaceful aura and the contrast between his tough on-screen characters and his serene, spiritual life.
Despite becoming a monk 15 years ago, Michael Lam remains in touch with many of his celebrity friends. Passionate about basketball, he plays regularly with actors Alex Fong and Louis Cheung. The former actor-turned-monk is also known for guiding those seeking spiritual wisdom and occasionally hosts Buddhist seminars.

he looks really cool. a true monk, that’s bad-ass. i always find it odd when i read about celebs that decide to venture into the other extreme end – which is the furthest thing from entertainment. but at the same time, i give them mad respect and props. he looks happy and content. that’s more than what we can say about certain twisted celebs like spencer leung (this guy is an extreme misogynist – i’ve heard his radio shows, definitely a b1tch in every sense of the word.)

This is awesome! I admire his devotion and discipline. This from a person who struggles with discipline every day, knowing it’s the key to everything. Blessings!
