Since its August 20 release, Black Myth: Wukong is probably the most popular action RPG at the moment. And the buzz is not just in China as it has also garnered significant international attention. All the talk about the game has even set off comparisons between some of its characters. Chinese Netizens seem to have found their celebrity doppelgangers.
Take for example the character of Erlang Shen Yang Jian. Funnily enough though, many pointed out the character closely resembles actor Zhang Han. The similarity is so much that they’ve joked about how the game may have to pay the actor for using his image. As it turns out, the game character was modeled after a Chinese actor named Wang Guo Hao Jie (王国豪杰). He says he’s flattered to be compared to these actors who are his seniors in the industry. Meanwhile, some also surmised the character of Princess Iron Fan to resemble Maggie Cheung?
Who’s not a doppelganger though is actress Zhang Yishang whose facial capture was used to create the character Kang-Jin Star (亢金星君). Kang-Jin Star is the boss to defeat in Chapter 3 of Black Myth: Wukong. The 28-year-old actress shared this is her first time standing in as a model for a RPG. If she looks somewhat familiar, you may know her as Sa Sha from the Detective Chinatown webseries. She’s starred in a number of projects, but being part of the biggest game now has certainly drawn her buzz. Zhang Yishang also shared some behind-the-scenes photos from her time on set, capturing the experience of bringing the character to life.
Black Myth: Wukong is inspired by Chinese mythology where the game’s monkey protagonist is based on the character Sun Wukong from Journey to the West. In the game, players will play the role of the Destined One and embark on a journey to the west full of dangers and surprises.
